At Tech Watch, we study the content that is shown to people on the internet and how that content influences their behaviors. It is paramount to our research that we collect data from real people in order to replicate an organic internet browsing setting. Tech Watch’s research participants (“field agents”) are found by enrolling a statistically balanced sample of people across America’s fifty states. Our field agents allow us to analyze specific content that is shown to them online in efforts to uncover nefarious activity on the internet.

As a result of our data analysis, we saw the need to expand our internet content monitoring system nationwide in order to protect democracy from being undermined by emerging technologies.

Unlike the many tracking applications and browsers today, Tech Watch is vested (and founded) in data privacy; therefore, the data we collect is completely private. We also do not analyze individual data, only aggregate data that has no identifying information.

Our research participants are crucial to our project as they allow us to collect and preserve ephemeral content (content that is normally lost forever). With the ability to preserve content through our proprietary software, we are able to put a microscope to the content being shown to our diverse sample of Americans. The findings from our internet content projects have made it evident that is absolutely essential for permanent, large-scale, internet content monitoring systems for a free and fair digital environment.

Our participants have the opportunity to become a Tech Watch field agent is the decision to stand in a vanguard that is paving the way to transparency, equitability, and safety in tomorrow’s technology for America and our children.

Learn about our Youth Content Project

It All Began...

Our journey began in 2013 when Senior Research Psychologist Dr. Robert Epstein discovered the ‘Search Engine Manipulation Effect.’ He demonstrated that politically biased rankings in search results have the potential to shift the voting preferences of undecided voters at significant rates, effectively stripping the public of one of the core tenants of democracy, our freedom. This study laid the groundwork for our team.

Through these findings and others like them, a group of individuals came together to learn more. The Search Engine Manipulation Effect sparked our interest, but now, our focus goes beyond the potential for bias in search engines. We’re working to develop systems that promote transparency on the internet by studying mainstream sources of information, from social media to news outlets to everything else in between.

Impact on Government

Dr. Epstein has testified to Congress and continues to send updates to leadership in Washington on both sides of the aisle, to help them create informed and meaningful legislation to end Big Tech’s monopoly on search.

We are working with AGs across the country, with candidates currently running for office, lawyers and law firms, etc. We give them our data to help them lauch first-of-their-kind cases showing real data – not just anecdotes.

America's Digital Shield

For the past six years, we have been developing an entirely new system for building transparency on the internet.  It is a 24/7 nationwide internet content monitoring system that will change everything.  Imagine a world free from biased algorithms, where information is shared with the people without an agenda, and there is real-time accountability when companies stray from integrity.

Through the Digital Shield you will gain real-time access to the extensive analysis of millions of data points, empowering we the people to hold Big Tech accountable for bias and harmful content shown to our children. This critical tool represents a crucial mission for a fair, ethical, and transparent digital landscape.

Your dollars go directly towards allowing us to enroll more research participants to help us collect data which is a necessary component for our research to continue and expand our internet content monitoring system.

Our strategy involves ensuring the accountability of these companies to the public through the following measures:

  • Archiving vast amounts of ephemeral content across the nation.
  • Conducting real-time analysis of this content.
  • Promptly exposing instances of bias, manipulation, and censorship as they unfold.

What we build will protect us not only now, but in the foreseeable future!

We would love to hear from you!

Formerly on ADULT STUDY PAGE:At The Tech Watch Project, we study the content that is shown to people on the internet.  All of the data we collect for our project comes directly from real people like you.  To measure all of this, we reach out to a random sample of people and ask them to be part of our research project.  Participants in our project allow us to analyze certain kinds of content that is shown to them online.

We collect data about what people are being shown on the internet.  We then use that data conduct research to analyze how that content could potentially influence their behavior.  But we are not only interested in the research, we are interested in the remedy. The data we collect is completely private- we only analyze aggregate data that has no identifying information. We use what we learn from our participants to generate our reports and conduct our analyses.

The findings from our adult projects have made way to a research-based monitoring system that we are looking to expand nationwide.

By enrolling in our study, you become an essential part of a movement that directly impacts the future of technology.

The Tech Watch Project exists to address the pressing challenges and ethical concerns arising in today’s rapidly advancing digital landscape.

The Problems We Address

Big Tech companies currently pose significant threats to democracy, our children, and our minds. We strive to shed light on these problems, which include:

  • Hidden techniques: Big Tech companies employ elusive methods that are hard to detect, allowing them to manipulate various spheres, including elections.
  • Covert influence: Through clandestine tactics, Big Tech companies can shape the beliefs and opinions of our children, exerting control without our awareness.
  • Pervasive monitoring: The widespread surveillance conducted by Big Tech companies raises privacy concerns and the potential misuse of personal information.
  • Massive censorship: Big Tech companies exercise extensive control over the information we consume, limiting our access to diverse perspectives and knowledge.

DEMOCRACY
UNDER THREAT

Our Approach

To address these challenges, we believe in making Big Tech companies accountable to the public. Our approach involves:

  • Preserving Ephemeral Content: We collect and archive vast amounts of ephemeral content nationwide, ensuring that crucial information is not lost and providing a record for analysis and investigation.
  • Real-Time Analysis: Our advanced technologies allow us to analyze the preserved content in real time, enabling us to identify and expose bias, manipulation, and censorship as they occur.
  • Sunlight is the Best Disinfectant: Guided by the philosophy of Supreme Court Justice Louis B. Brandeis, we strive to bring transparency to the actions of Big Tech companies. By shining a light on their practices, we aim to mitigate their negative impact on democracy and protect the safety of our children.
